MICRONUTRIENTS

What are Micronutrients?

Vitamins, minerals, and Phytochemicals (antioxidants) which the body needs in small (micro) amounts.  They help in a variety of body functions.

Why are micronutrients important?
  • They protect us from diseases and ailments

Deficiences in micronutrients can lead to:
  • Scurvy: lack of Vitamin C
  • Rickets: lack of vitamin D
  • Blindness: lack of vitamin A
  • Anemia: lack of iron
  • Weak bones: lack of calcium

Phytochemicals found in plants:
  • Beta-carotene: carrots and other ornage fruits and dark green vegetables
  • Lycopene: tomatoes
  • Flavonoids: soy products

Advice: Eat a wide variety of colourful fruits and vegetables – the more colourful your diet the better!
